Something really… weird… happened to me the other day.
I was returning something in a Target. While I was in the middle of making the transaction (I was the only person standing in line), a male of African descent in his mid-to-late twenties entered the store and came to stand very close behind me.
A few seconds later, it felt like he poked me with something.
I turned to see what was happening. When I did, I could see that he was doing something with his hands – it looked like he was putting something in his pocket. Then, he walked away from me, headed toward the front of the store. I seem to remember that he meandered a bit, he may have locked at his cell phone or something like that, then he left the store.
A told the cashier that I felt like I had been poked with something.
Not sure of what to do, I walked out of the store and followed the guy to his car. I videotaped him driving away, hoping that I would be able to get his license plate from the video (I couldn’t).
After making the video, and started to head back into the building. A woman asked what had happened with the guy. I told her, and she affirmed me. She said that he had come up very close behind her too, but that he hadn’t poked her with anything – she simply thought he was going to try to take her bag.
I got her name and number then headed back into the store.
The police and the EMTs were called. My wife was called, too. The Target people followed their protocols for the strange event.
I later went to the emergency room.
All in all, I think I’m okay. The medical professionals told me that there was a scratch, but that it didn’t appear that anything had broken the surface of the skin. So even if the person had tried to inject me with something, it hadn’t worked.
The police officers said that there wasn’t much that they could do. They said that even if the person had stuck me with a needle, that there wasn’t anyone else who saw that, so they couldn’t do anything about it (other people saw him standing close to me, though).
So that made me quite displeased. The reality that someone can potentially do something (or at least try to do something) to someone and then get away with it… just because nobody saw them do it… is sad.
My wife and I now figure that what I felt was probably a knife. The person was probably intending to hold me at knife-point, walk me out of the store, then who knows what. But he must have chickened out at the last minute.
This goes down as one of the weirdest things that’s ever happened to me.
What’s the weirdest thing that’s happened to you?
